Microsoft has signalled an increased commitment to 64-bit computing at its European conference for IT professionals in Barcelona.

"We are making big bets on 64-bit technology and working closely with our industry partners to enable a smooth transition for customers so they can begin to realise the benefits of mainstream 64-bit computing." said Bob Muglia, senior vice president of Microsoft's Windows Server division.

Products now optimised for 64-bit include the newly released SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005 and Virtual Server 2005 R2.

Muglia confirmed that Exchange Server 12, Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003, Windows Server, Longhorn Small Business Server, and Microsoft's infrastructure solution for midsize businesses, codenamed Centro, will be also optimised for x64 hardware.

In addition Virtual Server 2005 R2 will be available in volume licensing and retail during the first week of December, and Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 Beta 2 is now publicly available.

Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 is a 64-bit solution offering a high-performance computing platform.

Microsoft also unveiled Microsoft Dynamics GP, an enhanced enterprise resource planning solution combining the capabilities of Microsoft Dynamics GP (formerly Microsoft Business Solutions-Great Plains) with an Office-like interface.

This release delivers 21 role-based desktops, Business Analysis Cubes for Microsoft Excel, expanded reach and functionality around the Windows SharePoint Services portal.

Dynamics GP also offers greater functionality within its web-based portal to allow customers to place orders and manage their relationships with a company.
