Mobile TV is the buzzword for 2006 and graphics giant Nvidia has kicked off plans to take a slice of the pie.

At this week's 3GSM event in Barcelona, the company teamed up with semiconductor maker Dibcom to dramatically boost the quality of mobile TV on new phones and handhelds.

The new chip will incorporate Nvidia’s Geforce 5500 graphics processing unit (GPU) and the Dibcom DIB7000H DVB-H demodulator.

It promises both low power and high quality broadcast video.

The Geforce 5500 offers 30 frames per second of H.264 or Windows Media Video with high resolution, as well as support for surround sound.

The BBC recently announced a mobile TV service with Orange and rumour has it that Microsoft, BT and Virgin are about to announce a mobile TV service this week.

Handset manufacturers should have phones based on the Nvidia and Dibcom collaberation available later this year.
