Sober mutant spreads right-wing hate mail

Virus-infected Zombie PCs used to send offensive spam

Iain Thomson, vnunet.com 16 May 2005

PCs already infected with the Sober.p virus have been used as zombies to redirect right-wing hate mail by the newly intercepted Sober.q worm.

The Sober.p virus left infected PCs under the remote control of the virus author, and the machines began downloading Sober.q on Sunday evening.

Compromised PCs then began sending out messages with content like 'Multi-Kulturell = Multi-Kriminell', 'Dresden 1945' and 'The Whore Lived Like a German'.

The mutant worm sends messages in German and English and contains the following warning for antivirus companies: "I'm not a spammer, although I might become a one!"

The author is thought to be German, but no further details are available.

Sober.q was first picked up in Australia, but is spreading widely across Europe. It may have been launched to gain publicity in light of this week's celebrations of the ending of the World War II.
