ScottishPower Energy Network (SPEN), the transmission and distribution unit of Scottish Power, is to connect its critical applications through a next-generation IP-based network.

The implementation by communications supplier Thus will allow the replacement of legacy networks. The planned infrastructure will connect 300 sites in 130 locations, running voice and data services into transmission substations.

Other traffic across the network will include telemetry and remote monitoring, voice traffic, inter-site communication and site to control centre links

The project will allow SPEN to maintain its level of service to customers and accomodate future developments, said senior project engineer telecoms, Richard Rutherford.

"The solution meets our needs today and will grow with us in the future. It the resilience and reliability we need to ensure that we continue to deliver excellent levels of service to our customers," he said.
