Speed demons on show at Computex

Dual GPU, liquid metal cooling and twin AGP/PCIe graphics cards in Taipei

Graphics cards manufacturers were expected to be active around Computex, and they didn't disappoint, with plenty of new cards based around both Nvidia and ATI.

Sapphire was showing its new Liquid Metal Cooling graphics card, which uses Gallium to cool the card. Gallium is 65 times more conductive than water, and the card's pipe was only just warm to the touch, even though it had been running for hours. But the prototype, based on an ATI X850XT, still needed a lot of development work.

It used two fans to shift the hot air and was pretty noisy, but Sapphire said these issues were being ironed out before the card's launch in the fourth quarter.

MSI had several cards coming out based around the Nvidia GPU, plus two working concept cards, including one that can be housed in either a PCI-Express or AGP slot. Based on an ATI Radeon X800, its connectors are on the top and bottom of the card, and it can be fliped around - it uses a bridge to move it from AGP or PCIe mode, depending on the slot being used.

Another concept card was the fast NX6800Ultra dual GPU graphics card, which boasts a whopping 1GB G-DDR3 memory. MSI was undecided on whether it would bring them to market, unsure if either would command enough demand from consumers.

Of the cards it is releasing, the NX6600-TD128EZ is overclocked by default and so guaranteed by MSI. It is similar to a 6600GT, but will be much cheaper when it comes out this summer.
