The world’s fastest PC got to meet the public this week at
Cebit 2006.
Built through a collaboration of
Asetek,
Kingston Technology and
Western
Digital, the Dream Machine boasts a blistering clock-speed of 5.46GHz.
This is the fourth time this bunch has gathered to build a PC rocket, but the
improvement seems small considering 2005’s model was overclocked to 5GHz.
This year’s model is built around an overclocked Intel P4 3.8GHz CPU with the
kind of internal cooling system not seen outside the Space Shuttle.
To avoid meltdown, the Dream Machine sports asetek’s Vapochill LightSpeed CPU
cooling and WaterChill graphics and motherboard chipset cooling.
It also features Kingston’s HyperX KHX7200D2K2 DDR2 Ram and Western Digital’s
Raptor X 150 GB hard drive.
'To reach a CPU speed of 5.46GHz it is crucial to have very efficient cooling
on all essential hardware', said Morten Berg-Christensen, senior communications
manager at Asetek.
'That is why we have chosen phase-change cooling reaching CPU surroundings
close to -33° degrees under load. Additionally the graphics card and the
motherboard chipset are also chilled.'
