Hitachi launches hybrid camcorders

Hitachi is claiming an industry first by launching the first camcorders to
allow users to record to both blank DVDs discs and an internal hard disk
drive (HDD).

The company has launched the DZH500A, which records to DVD-R, DVD-RW,
DVD-RAM and DVD+RW discs as well as to its 30GB internal HDD. It also comes
with 30X optical zoom, SD memory card slot and will be available in April
for about £400. There is also an entry-level model, the DZHS300A, which is
shipping now with an 8GB hard drive, 25X optical zoom and SD memory card
slot for around £300.

According to the company, the new models will allow users to record up to
23 hours of home videos and then transfer a highlight reel to a DVD disc
with the push of a button, bypassing the PC.

“The Hitachi Hybrid DVD+HDD camcorders provide customers with the ultimate
convenience of a single, affordable device capable of supporting the two
most popular video formats on the market today,” said Jeff Fochtman,
product manager for Hitachi America’s Ubiquitous Platform Systems Division.
“Customers who value ease of use in a high-technology product are very
excited about the hybrid camcorder's ability to dub multiple DVDs straight
from the camcorder's hard drive.”

Alongside the 1-Touch Easy Dubbing feature is one-second start-up time and
and drop-proofing system that automatically detect falls, suspends
read/write activity and cushions the hard drive for impact.
