On Thursday night an estimated 13.5 million people watched the video of the single, which was broadcast simultaneously on terrestrial and satellite television.
The track has been produced to raise money for victims of the famine and civil war in Sudan.
Industry analysts are closely watching the level of interest in the downloadable track, since the physical version will not be sold in the shops for another week.
