Nokia has launched a version of the popular Python object-oriented programming language for its Series 60-based smartphones.

The handset giant said that the move will allow open source developers using the programming language to execute Python commands and run Python scripts and applications on Series 60-based devices.

The software has been tested on handsets including the Nokia 6630, 6600, 7610 and Nokia N-Gage QD.

Python is an object-oriented programming language developed and maintained by a global community of open source developers under the oversight of the Python Software Foundation.

Nokia vice president Lee Epting said: "Python will make mobile application development easy and accessible to programmers seeking a fast and developer-friendly avenue to writing mobile applications."

The company said that Python for Series 60, available for free download here, is well suited to the development of prototype and proof-of-concept applications.

According to the company, developers can execute Python commands using an interactive console in a Series 60-based device, accessible via the keypad or a remote connection to a PC over Bluetooth.

Using Python for Series 60, developers can write Python applications and install them to a Series 60-based device which can then run the applications from the Python environment.

Python applications can be developed to run as standalone applications with the selection of an icon from the device menu. Developers can also execute Python commands and scripts in the emulators of Series 60 Developer Platform SDKs.
