NVidia has unveiled two GeForce 6 graphics cards for PC systems, while ATI Technologies has renewed its focus on the mobile sector with two newly developed graphics processors for handhelds.

NVidia's latest cards, a 512MB version of the high performance GeForce 6800 Ultra GPU and a new lower-cost AGP version of the GeForce 6200 GPU, are aimed at professional users and gamers. Both are compatible with Microsoft's DirectX 9 Shader Model 3.0, which is being used to make graphics more lifelike.

"Whether you are an extreme gamer or someone looking for an amazing upgrade, nVidia has the right product," said Ujesh Desai, general manager desktop products at nVidia.

Although nVidia has been moving most of its latest products over to PCI Express, the launch of an AGP card shows there is still life in the old connection technology.

Meanwhile ATI has reaffirmed its commitment to the mobile graphics business with the launch of two Imageon media processors. The 2282 and 2182 processors are aimed at high-end and mid-range phones respectively and are used to boost audio and video performance on mobile devices.

"The best camera is the one you have on hand to capture a memorable moment. That applies to all media devices," said Ravi Gananathan, senior product marketing manager for the handheld products group at ATI.

"Digital camcorders are the next killer app that carriers and consumers are looking for on mobile phones. The next generation Imageon powered mobile phones will allow users to be ready when they need to be to snap a picture, record a movie or listen to music with no compromise on quality."
