Apple has released a new patch for its Mac OS X 10.3.9 operating system to clean up the way it handles Java.

The flaw had been causing stability problems for some aspects of the operating system, most notably in its Safari web browser. Users are being advised to patch their systems as needed.

"After updating to Mac OS X 10.3.9, some systems may have issues with Java applications and Java-enabled websites when using Safari," said the company in a statement.

"Safari may unexpectedly quit, and standalone Java applications may unexpectedly quit or not launch. This update resolves that issue."

The exact fix differs depending on whether users have Java 1.4.1 or 1.4.2. Apple has posted full details on its website.
