Government apologises for email blunder

Labour supporters complain about 'questionnaire'

Home Secretary Charles Clarke has apologised for sending an email attachment to Labour Party supporters.

In an email sent out last night to members of the public listed on the Labour Party's email database, Clarke provided what he called an "update" on the Terrorism Bill stating very clearly the government's current position in advance of today's debate.
But at the end of the message he offers an intriguing apology for a questionnaire sent out with an earlier email.

"Finally, I would like to apologise for the questionnaire which was attached to the message that I sent out to party supporters on Friday," he wrote.

"It was not intended to gauge public opinion but to start a political debate around the proposals currently being debated in Parliament.

"Many people have raised with me perfectly valid concerns about how the questions were drafted. I can only say that I share those concerns and give my assurance that questions of this type will not be used in the future."

The Labour Party declined to respond to vnunet.com's enquiries this morning requesting details of the original questionnaire.
