Chip giant
AMD
has unveiled plans to build a $2.5bn microprocessor manufacturing factory in
Dresden, Germany.
The expanded facilities will enable the firm to double its processor yield
from each silicon wafer by moving from 200mm to 300mm fabrication processes.
AMD quoted strong sales against its rival
Intel
as the reason for the expansion. Chief executive Hector Ruiz said that the move
was prompted by "rising global demand for AMD products".
"These strategic investments highlight how significant Germany and Europe are
to the future of AMD competitiveness," he said.
