Brits are the most sports obsessed nation in Europe, at least when it comes to watching it on TV.

Research released today by LG Electronics looked into European viewing habits when it comes to their favourite sports.

UK citizens spend more of their free time watching sport on TV than any other nation, and nearly a quarter spend anywhere between nine and 30 hours a week glued to the box watching various sporting events.

The upcoming Olympic Games in China ranked as the most anticipated event among Europeans, but football fans came in a close second with the Euro 2008 championship.

Cycling and tennis tournaments also come in the top five with 22 per cent and 19 per cent respectively.

However, rather than head into the great outdoors, 90 per cent of those surveyed would rather stay in their own homes than travel to a bar or watch the event live at the venue.

"This research indicates that watching sport on TV is a key part of the average European's lifestyle and is firmly embedded in their weekly routine," said Anthony Yang, general product manager at LG.

The research also revealed that the British and Spanish are the most likely to be found with an alcoholic drink on the go while watching their favourite sport, and over a third will opt for beer or lager to make the most of the viewing experience.
